Must admit - if you were using IIS then the fact that asp's are handled straight out of the box does help...

support wise - you can never get help directly from Microsoft so no gain there so they are about equil on that line, although if you had a problem you are more than likely to get a fix from PHP sooner.

against the MS side - a chap I know is doing some realy heavy table work using an asp -> odbc -> unix sql system and it causes grief - either the maths is wrong or parts of the server hang - very problematic. PHP seems to win over with native support for databases (my sql) - thats what this board is using... damb easy to set up too!

Cool

Can't use MySQL unfortunately at the moment as the database I'm working with is a Visual Foxpro DBC as it is part of another app. I have been getting on better with PHP and have mainly been using the COM technique, creating COM servers in VFP (most the code can stay the same then) and calling them from PHP. Works well. Can do exactly the same from ASP but then I have to stick with IIS. The fact that I'm using VFP COM servers means I have to stick with WIN32 so no moving to linux or the like for me at the mo.

wow - getting into this then! - just as an aside - have a look on my about page - theres a good editor I use for php (PHP Master Editor).

You could always create the com interfaces using an IP stack Idea - that way as long as you can talk IP up can get the data to anything!

Sounds like that technique might impress the girls, but creating the com servers in vfp makes code sharing between desktop app and web app a doddle and letting vfp take care of the interface is quick, easy and stress free. Now VFP8 RTM is upon us I wonder what is next ...

COM in VFP is so easy it's untrue and so useful ... the app i work with now is 3 tier, UI > BUSINESS > DATA. The UI is whatever, VFP, WEB, VB etc. The BUSINESS is VFP COM servers. The DATA is whatever DBC,mySQL,MSSQL etc etc ....

Our App is written purely in VFP7, we have already piloted and will push to recompile to production level in VFP8 by the end of April.
